The Skinny On: The Met Costume Ball

You thought prom was a big fuss? Try the monstrous fashion madness that is the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala.
Hosted by Anna Wintour, the Met Ball is when the tick of Hollywood feasts itself on the blood of high fashion...or is it the other way around? No one can really tell through all the air kisses and champagne fizz, but no problemo! All that matters is that you’re a starlet who is lucky enough to have a ticket, you wear a dress that cost the amount of an entire year of a private college education.
This caveat excludes most of us from going—but that doesn’t mean if you ever find yourself stuck in an elevator with Andre Leon Talley, you can’t at least know what you’re talking about. Here’s your cheat sheet on the exclusive Met Ball…
Each year, the Met Ball has a different theme relating to the exhibit at the Costume Institute. Attendees of the party tend to dress accordingly—one year was Anglomania and another year was superheroes. This year, the theme is models in honor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s show, “Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion.”
It’s colloquially referred to as “Anna’s party” and only the most of-the-moment guests are invited. Oh yeah, and those guests who can afford it! Tickets cost upwards of $6,500 each and companies like Tiffany’s or Chanel buy tables for $65,000 to $150,000 each. The cash raises money for the Costume Institute at the Met.
While some couples attend together, like Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen (or Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese!), designers typically invite starlets as their dates. But the pairings can get really weird! Like in 2007 when the creators-and-their-muses included Michael Kors and Eva Mendes, Fransisco Costa and Christina Ricci, Valentino and Jennifer Garner, and—head scratch here—Donatella Versace and Hilary Swank.
All the men wear black tie, which doesn’t seem to suit George Clooney. Last year, Clooney joked to reporters, “I’m wearing a skirt under here, and the sequins are really chafing!”
Also in 2007, a female peacock escaped from a 20-foot-high gilded bird case erected in the Great Hall of the Met. Organizers chased her—she’s called a “peahen"—around the museum until they snagged her and put her back with her three peacock friends. I guess, like a true supermodel, she just had to strut her stuff.

Diamond couple celebrate marriage

A WARTIME romance that stood the test of time has seen a husband and wife celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss.
German Erika Seetzen met her English soldier Jim Woods at age 19, and after just a week of daily meetings the pair fell in love.
But fate nearly tore them apart when Jim was demobbed and sent back to England despite his protestations and efforts to stay.
A series of international love letters strengthened their relationship and on February 12, 1949, Erika bade farewell to her family and made the arduous trip to London, catching trains to Holland and then boarding the Princess Beatrix of New Zealand steamship.
“The weather was terrible, the sea was wild, the soup on the table spilled over the rim and everybody on board was feeling ill,” said Erika.
But when she finally reached London and saw her Jimmy waiting with his parents and sister she knew the journey had been worth it.
However, as a foreigner, Erika could only stay in the UK for two months and was due to leave on April 17, 1949.
The day before she and Jim married, though not without drama, as Jim and his best man could not get to the registry office as the buses were all full.
“It was a legging job as we ran from Latchford to Central Station, where we managed to get a taxi, bribe the driver, who got us to our destination with minutes to spare,” said Jim.
Sixty years and two children later, the couple, of Egerton Avenue in Bruche, are still as enamoured as they were in Germany all those years ago.
They have lived in Shrewsbury and Clevedon as well as Warrington. Jim was the youngest bus driver in Warrington in the 1950s and then ran a bargain centre agency.
Erika ran Tiffany fashion agency and Tiffany hairstyles.
“The success of our long marriage would be our mutual respect for each other, working together, going through thick and thing, pulling on the same road and laughing and having fun together,” said Erika.
The couple, who will both be 81 this month, celebrated with family at the Boysnope Golf Club in Manchester.

Carole White, founder of Premier Model Management

Tell me about your style.
Since I work with young people, I am the original of what in fashion. I am by how models dress, but I adjust for that I'm not like mutton dressed as lamb. There are a million things I can not wear, because at my age - I'm 58th I like simple, practical clothes and expensive things Mix of High Street.
Do you usually wear much jewelry?
Yes, I am a creature of habit, and always the same songs. Former Aquamarine Ring was another gift from Naomi. She bought in New Orleans bought 10 years ago and greater still. The ring was my mother and grandmother. The eternity of the ring was my husband - we have together for 32 years and we are able to marry this summer. The long chain of Tiffany jewelry and all types - Cameo a medallion of a fortune teller, a religious symbol, to avert evil spirits and Argos "Mama" trailer for my son. My bracelets are friends and colleagues. I found the bracelet of gold buried at the beach in St. Tropez, when I was 18 years.
What do you think of your clothes on you?
In the work, hopefully strong, and the evening, I hope women.
What is the best advice that you had over the years?
That the way is beautiful, a lot of confidence and false, if you do not own.
What is your first memory of fashion?
To learn to control my makeup on Lucy Clayton [a modeling school], if I was 18 years. During this period - in the early 60s - Models to do their own hair and makeup. We all have contributed Max Factor Pan-Stick tape and brown Rouge. I was crap, and only three months. I'm much better in the search for models, as one.
Faire, whose style admire most?
Kate Moss, because it is very accessible by its appearance. Anyone can, even in things that door, that is why they so successful. Annoyingly, it is the only super model I have ever worked.
What do you advise us of your young fashion models?
Keep it simple. I advise them to wear Skinny jeans with a t-shirt - simple combinations shows that their shape and are not expensive.
Best buy?
Azzedine Alaia a pocket, I bought in auction in Cannes. I have £ 150 and had no idea it was worth £ 5000 to Izzie Blow [end of the designer] said. We will from time to time for lunch.
Has there been an opportunity, particularly if you fabulous?
Eight years ago, I went to a charity event in Barcelona, with Nelson Mandela and Naomi. I wore a dress amazing Aquamarin Ghost. It was really nice and because I wear a lot of black, said the man, as much to me. Working with Naomi opened many doors, but Mandela was the most beautiful person I met.

The Museum of Arts & Design opened its doors to the public at its new location at 2 Columbus Circle in New York City on September 27, 2008. The museum is home to the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Jewelry Gallery, the nation's first gallery dedicated solely to contemporary jewelry.
All of the museum’s approximately 500 pieces of jewelry from its permanent collection are housed in the Jewelry Gallery in study drawers, easily accessed below the current exhibition. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation is proud to support the Museum of Arts & Design as it highlights jewelry as an important element of the decorative arts.
The inaugural exhibition is Elegant Armour: The Art of Jewelry, which features over 130 works of modern and contemporary jewelry from 1948 to the present.
